James O. Armitage, MD

James O. Armitage, MD, is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Nebraska, a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Iowa, and a brief stint in private practice in Omaha. He developed and directed the Bone Marrow Transplant program at the University of Iowa and later at the University of Nebraska where he also served as section chief of Hematology/Oncology, vice-chair of Internal Medicine, chair of Internal Medicine, dean of the College of Medicine, and is currently the Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine in the section of Oncology/Hematology. Dr Armitage is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology, a Fellow of both the American and Royal College of Physicians, and past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He has received the Claude Jacquillat Award (Paris), the Rosenthal Foundation Award (AACR), the Heath Memorial Award (M. D. Anderson), and San Salvatore Award (Lugano,) among others. He has authored or co-authored more than 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts, a number of book chapters, and is the co-editor of several books including Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine, Abeloff’s Clinical Oncology, and texts on both Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He is married, is the father of four children, and has four grandchildren.
